The coffee shop Tokyo Smoke Found is sandwiched between two warehouses in Toronto’s West End. Built in a former loading dock, the 330-square-foot space—outfitted with custom steel shelving, exposed brick, a rough-hewn common table, and Tolix stools—is the face of a new lifestyle brand that aims to elevate weed.

Legalized marijuana is booming business—it amounted to $2.7 billion in 2014—and the numbers are projected to rise. One report estimates that legalized weed will become an $11 billion industry by 2019. Tokyo Smoke is emblematic of the larger “Whole Foods-ification” of weed and endeavors to recast the product as more of a lifestyle. As “prohibition” is steadily lifted on recreational use, there’s an opportunity for startups to cash in on a potentially lucrative market.

Tokyo Smoke is the brainchild of Alan Gernter, a former Google employee who helped develop the company’s first global business strategy team in 2009, and his father Lorne Gertner, a fashion-industry veteran and chairman of PharmaCan, a company that invests in medical marijuana businesses. Alan and Lorne are betting that the loosening laws governing cannabis—Canada’s prime minister Justin Trudeau wants to legalize weed—will open the doors for more sophisticated branding, marketing, and products.

“It’s not about the prototypical stoner,” Alan says. “We want to build a brand for the contemporary urban citizen—it’s clean and elegant, which signals quality and transformation.”

While your average back-alley head shops sell pipes, bongs, and merchandise emblazoned with marijuana leaves, Tokyo Smoke is $300 vaporizers, artisanal ceramic pipes, and oxford shirts. Inside Tokyo Smoke, customers can peruse a number of design magazines and books, spy a few Lego Architecture models, and grab a cup of coffee made from sustainably grown and ethically sourced beans.

The architecture of Tokyo Smoke’s Toronto outpost reinforces the narrative of a gritty product having its Pretty Woman moment. Like Julia Roberts’s Vivian emerging from a Beverly Hills boutique prim, polished, and “respectable,” the industrial-meets-modern interiors—designed with architect Steven Fong—speak to the power of packaging and branding to sway the pendulum of perception.

“We transformed a ‘dirty’ space into a beautiful space,” Lorne says. “In some ways, cannabis is a messy business and Tokyo Smoke is an opportunity to introduce a brand that has authenticity, and the architecture brings authenticity.”

The Gertner brothers are not alone in their design-centric entrepreneurial spirit. Snoop Dogg worked with Pentagram to rebrand his line of weed; a founders of the popular design/lifestyle blog Sight Unseen recently opened a smoking-accessories shop, and there’s aslew of other companies on a mission to make pot mainstream through calculated marketing and positioning.

But Tokyo Smoke’s strategy doesn’t end with packaging or products: it’s about connecting the dots to communicate how its cannabis will make a person feel.

Instead of using the names of cannabis strains, which aren’t familiar to everyone, Tokyo Smoke structures its products around four experiences—Go, Relax, Balance, and Relief—and relates them to industries with strong cultures, like coffee and fashion.

“There’s a limited nomenclature to understand the experiences around cannabis,” Alan says. “By creating a design-oriented brand, we can build a language.” For example, Go is described as “an energizing, awakening sativa” and compared to drinking an espresso shot. Relax is an indica strain and consuming it is compared to drinking decaf or the feeling of being wrapped in a soft cashmere sweater, which you can also buy from Tokyo Smoke’s in-house clothing line.

“When people consume Tokyo Smoke cannabis they’re going to have a certain type of experience,” Alan says. “A huge part of the revolution is about experiences.”

Tokyo Smoke plans to start selling its cannabis products this year in Washington State, California, and Oregon and open five more stores in Canada and the United States.
